Dear Families,

Monday is an early release day in the district. Your child will be dismissed from school at 1:40.  Please help us by picking up your child promptly at 1:40 so we may begin our professional development in a timely manner.

On Monday, the teachers will learn about and explore an exciting new online resource for their students called myOn. Our media specialist Lynne Elfeky will facilitate the training. myOn contains thousands of enhanced digital books from award-winning publishers.  The site contains a library with fiction and nonfiction books in a variety of formats—picture books, graphic novels, chapter books, and titles for advanced , struggling and reluctant readers—myON provides content to draw readers in and keep them motivated to read more.

Here is the link where you will discover additional information about the site: http://thefutureinreading.myon.com

By the end of October, every student at Center School will have access to the site and will have the opportunity to create an individualized electronic “book bag” selection for independent reading. Your child's teacher will let you know exactly how she will use the resource with her students.

The teachers will also  explore other interactive eBooks available to our students. Here’s the link to the library catalogue for you to peruse. http://library.longmeadow.k12.ma.us/common/servlet/presenthomeform.do?l2m=Home&tm=Home&l2m=Home

During the second half of the professional development , teachers will work on curriculum extensions for their students for the WIN (What I need)  block that is a component of your child’s day. The “create session” will provide teachers with more time to explore and then determine some specific intervention, reteaching ,  and/or enrichment learning for their students based on needs.

Other happenings

Monday: The all school panoramic picture will be taken at 9:00. Please have your child wear red or a shade of red for the picture to show his/her Cardinal spirit.

Wednesday: Our first Helping Hands effort will be  before school in the cafeteria…Hooray to the  5th graders for getting us started!! Details can be found in the letter sent to families and on teachers’ websites.

Dismissal procedure: We have seen a marked improvement in the dismissal. Overall, it looks and feels more safe and orderly.Just a gentle reminder to wait at the bottom of the esplanade or on the playground for your child. The front of the school is not a meeting spot and complicates the carline procedure. PLEASE make sure your child knows the after school meeting spot.

Please don't forget to vote for our 2 new School Council members. The ballot will close Tuesday.

Parent Teacher Conferences: please make sure you’ve scheduled your day and time with your child’s teacher.

Please remember that families are welcome to meet with me at any time to discuss any issues. You may always call the school office to coordinate a meeting.

I hope you enjoy a lovely fall weekend!

Regards,

Donna Hutton, Principal
