Dear Center School Families,
I hope your children and your family eased smoothly into the routines of the school year as we leave behind the slower pace of summer. Our community is off to a strong beginning in many ways. You may wonder what your child’s days look like and perhaps hear a response from your child of “nothing” when you inquire what happened during his/her day.
Let me share an important “noticing” …
Teachers expend a tremendous amount of energy during the beginning weeks of school modeling expectations for students. They implement a gradual release of responsibility model across all content areas, which is best understood this way:
The “workshop model” is highly effective in growing independent learners who accept ownership of their learning and their behavior. We launch our Peace Builders program in the same manner. Students are developing an understanding of ways to increase peace in their community as we look for the promise of the PeaceBuilders pledge in daily actions.
Our Open House will be Thursday, September 22nd. The evening is for parents and guardians only. The evening provides a wonderful glimpse into your child’s school year ahead.
We begin with a PTO sponsored social and Principal’s Welcome on the esplanade from 6:00 to 6:30. The first classroom presentation will begin at 6:45. The second presentation begins at 7:30. Open House affords teachers an opportunity to share her hopes and dreams for her students; and an opportunity to grow her partnership with families. Families will learn about grade level expectations across all curriculum areas during the presentations. Please mark your calendars for this special evening.
September is an eventful month. The Fall Carnival is Friday and our 5th graders are beyond excited for the event! We'll celebrate International Peace Day with our students on the 21st. Helping Hands begins September 27th-more information in the coming days.
Just a gentle reminder to check our school, teachers', and PTO websites to keep informed of all happenings. If you are on twitter, please follow me: @HuttonDonna…I’m hoping to grow my followers!!
Finally, please tune into our school newscast CSS, filmed and narrated by our 5th graders with Mrs. Giuggio’s guidance. http://centertechnology.blogspot.com/ It’s a phenomenal way to "visit" Center through our children’s lens.
I extend appreciation on behalf of the school community for your support in creating an extraordinarily positive beginning for our students.
Donna Hutton, Principal
