“If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, the excitement, and the mystery of the world we live in.”    Rachel Carson

Dear Center School Families,

I extend an “official” heartfelt welcome to new and “veteran” families on behalf of your Center School community. At the end of our first day of school, I hope your child is filled with excitement and celebration of new beginnings.

An educators’ life is extraordinarily special for countless reasons, one being the privilege to begin anew with children each school year.  We measure our year by the start of school –so happy new year to all!!  The students’ excitement and optimism is something that I always await. Today was wonderful!!

We anticipate a tremendous year of learning and growth for your child. We strive to create and maintain high standards for students’ learning; and we deeply value our work to educate and grow the hearts of our students.  To enhance our important work that creates caring and empathetic citizens, Center School is a PeaceBuilders School.

Center staff received a full day of training last week; and we’ll work throughout the year to teach our community the practices and principles of becoming a “peacebuilder”.

My goal is to introduce you to the program through the attached family resources. I'll share more information as we move through the year. Please visit the PeaceBuilders site (link on our website: http://ctr.longmeadow.k12.ma.us).  Your child will learn the PeaceBuilders pledge this week. Enjoy the family discussions suggested in the attached documents. PeaceBuilders will grow with your help and support.

I read a story to your Center School educators on opening day entitled The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade. The story is about Sally, a girl who pays “super extra special attention” to her world, especially standing up for others. Our goal is to help our students learn that they can and will make a difference in their world by looking out for one another, just as Sally changed her school world.

I’m in the process of updating my Principal’s blog.  I’ll send a message when I’m ready to go!  Please sign up and visit often, as well as visit teacher’s websites for happenings. So many exciting curriculum developments this year; and our goal is to keep you well-informed about your child’s learning!

Finally, I extend my appreciation to the Center School PTO who fully funded the PeaceBuilders program!  Enrichment such as PeaceBuilders happens because of our PTO's support and generosity, so please find ways to support an exceptional team of parents. Here’s their link: https://sites.google.com/site/centerelementaryschoolpto/home Please sign up for their weekly email blast-another way to keep up on your school’s events.

I have a request of you in the coming days. Please say hello and introduce yourselves often to me! I’m greeting many new families and the more I see you and talk with you, the quicker I will get to know everyone!

Enjoy your evening with your wonderful children. I hope your child's  hopes and dreams for the school year are realized...

Kind regards,

Donna Hutton, Principal
